September in the Alps is a strange little window.
Summer is still hanging on, winter feels a few months away and there is not a ski boot in sight yet.But behind the scenes? Winter is already being built.
Hotels are recruiting teams, restaurants are planning menus, bars are looking at their event calendars and resorts are preparing for another season.
And if live music is going to be part of your hotel this winter, now is the time to start thinking about it.
Because your hotel doesn’t just need a band.
It needs a soundtrack.
One hotel. Many different moments.
Think about everything that happens inside a hotel over the course of one winter day. Guests come back from skiing looking for somewhere to sit down, have a drink and unwind.
Later, the atmosphere changes.
Some people head for dinner. Others stay at the bar. New guests arrive. The volume slowly comes up. Perhaps Thursday is your big après-ski night. Friday needs something livelier. Sunday afternoon works better with a relaxed acoustic set by the fire.
Then there are the dates that sit outside the normal weekly programme: Christmas, New Year, opening parties, closing parties, corporate groups and special events.
They are all completely different moments. So why would they all need the same music?
A strong hotel music programme looks at the entire guest experience and chooses entertainment that complements each part of it. Sometimes that means a full live band. Sometimes it means an acoustic duo, a solo musician, a pianist, a DJ, DJ and sax, or something completely different. The important part is getting the right sound, in the right room, at the right time.
Live music programming for hotels is about more than filling dates
This is one of the biggest differences between finding an artist and actually programming entertainment for a hotel. Anyone can look for someone who happens to be available on a Thursday. The more important questions are:
-Who are your guests?
-What atmosphere are you trying to create?
-Which areas of the hotel need entertainment?
-Do you want to keep guests in the bar after skiing?
-Are you trying to attract people from outside the hotel?
-Could a weekly event become something guests actively look forward to?
-Does your restaurant need background atmosphere rather than a show?
-Which dates during the winter need something bigger?
And, just as importantly, what actually works operationally inside your venue? The answers will be completely different from one hotel to another. That is why we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all entertainment.

Your après-ski and your cocktail bar should not sound the same
Take a hotel with several spaces. Perhaps you have a terrace that becomes lively as the lifts close, a lounge where guests gather before dinner and a bar that gets busier later in the evening. That could easily be three very different musical briefs within the same building.
Après-ski
Après needs an artist who understands energy. It is not simply about playing upbeat songs. Great après musicians know how to read an international crowd, when to push the room, when to let people sing, and how to turn a relatively normal afternoon into the session everybody remembers from their holiday.
Early evening and cocktails
Move inside a few hours later and the brief can be completely different. A strong acoustic artist, pianist, duo, saxophonist or chilled DJ can give a hotel bar atmosphere without taking over the room.
Dinner
Live music during dinner needs another approach again. The aim may be warmth rather than volume: something that elevates the room while still allowing guests to talk, eat and enjoy the service.
Later in the evening
Then there are the nights when you actively want to move the energy upwards. A party band, DJ, DJ and sax combination or carefully chosen live act can turn the hotel bar into somewhere guests want to stay rather than somewhere they leave after dinner. It is all part of the same hotel. But it should not all have the same soundtrack.
The best weekly events become part of a hotel’s identity
One-off events are great. But some of the most successful hotel entertainment programmes are built around consistency.
-A Thursday après session.
-Sunday acoustic music.
-Friday night live.
-A resident DJ
When the programme is right, guests begin to know about it before they arrive. Chalet hosts recommend it. Concierges mention it. Locals know the night. Returning guests remember it from the previous year. It becomes part of the venue rather than simply another item on the entertainment calendar. That is when live music starts working particularly hard for a hospitality business. You are not only creating atmosphere for the people already in the room. You are creating a reason to come.
We know the Alps because we work in them
Après Ski Bands has been working with hotels, bars, restaurants, resorts and hospitality venues across the Alps for years. Our artists perform in everything from intimate hotel lounges and restaurants to luxury properties, packed après-ski terraces and late-night venues.
Over the years, we have worked with hotels and hospitality venues including RockyPop, L’Écrin Blanc, Hôtel I.L.Y., Portetta, Hilton Hotels, Koh I Nor and many more.
150+ acts. 42 resorts. More than 4,000 gigs a year.
Après Ski Bands now works with more than 150 artists across 42 resorts, programming more than 4,000 performances a year.
But having a large roster is only useful if you know who to put where.
Our artists include solo musicians, acoustic duos, full bands, DJs, saxophonists, roaming performers and acts capable of moving between several different formats.
Many of them perform well over 150 shows a year.
They are used to international audiences, demanding winter schedules and rooms that can change completely from one hour to the next.
That experience is exactly what makes Alpine performers so good at reading a crowd.
And it gives us the flexibility to build programmes around venues rather than trying to make venues fit whichever artist happens to be available.
